Accessible Grilling

>>Brian: Hi. My name is Brian Norton with The INDATA Project at Easterseals Crossroads in Indiana and today we’re
gonna take a look at some different grilling tools to help folks who have
disabilities be able to do that task a little bit easier. So we have a couple of
different things out here today. The first one we’re going to talk about are
just these gloves. These are just regular kind of gloves, but again for folks who
have maybe some dexterity or fine motor control issues maybe they maybe don’t
have the hand strength that they need you’ve got some nice rubber gripping on
here and you get some individual digits you’re not kind of in a mitten or
anything like that you can really kind of grab a hold of something maybe a
little bit more assured that when you grab it you’re gonna be able to hold on
to it.The other one is this other one it is a glove, however it’s got some really
great texture to it for you to be able to really grip onto something a little
bit more solidly than you would just a traditional cotton mitten or something
like that that you might wear for getting things out of the stove. Other
things we’ve got a couple of different thermometers here. This one over here on
the left is a tactile meat thermometer and along the left-hand side you’re
going to see some different notches that is for folks to be able to feel how hot
their food is and so you can kind of feel where that little arrow is as it
goes up and down to be able to know just how hot things have gotten. Over here
we have an app enabled thermometer this is the iGrill and you can actually
download an app on your phone or on a mobile device when you plug this into
your meats you can then step away and be alerted when it does get to the right
temperature and so great little tool for folks to be able to kind of either use
the digital display to be able to tell how hot something is if you have a
visual impairment or just to be able to remember hey I’ve got something in the
stove or in the oven and I want to make sure I don’t over overcook it there so
and then the other thing there are lots of different you kitchen utensils for
folks to be able to use this is just an example of one this is called a double
spatula so when you’re getting things up and off the grill or you’re getting them
out of the oven or whatever you’re going to be assured that you can kind of
really grip it and grab onto and so those are some different tools to
be able to help make cooking a little bit easier for folks. That’s your tech
tip for this week my name is Brian Norton with The INDATA Project at Easterseals Crossroads in Indiana.
