Barista inspired to become master coffee roaster

This tattoo right here is an arabica coffee plant. This is basically me branding myself and saying coffee is my life, coffee is my passion, coffee is my future. My name’s Patrek. I’m a barista here at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery and Tasting Room. And I also work as a green coffee loader technician. Being a green coffee loader basically means that I support our roasters in their day to day operations. Green coffee is going to be the seed of a coffee cherry. It’s going to be raw, and it’s what farmers will pick cherries, harvest and pulp and mill at their plants. And they’ll package them in burlap bags. Each bag of coffee can range from 100 to 150 pounds. Putting physical labor into what you do makes you even more proud of it. This place really inspired coffee passion in me. It made me see, wow, coffee can be so much more than here is your latte. When I got the email and the opportunity to be a part of this team and this store, I can’t really even describe it, because it was something that I said I wanted to do. I said, I really want to do this, more than anything. And I did it. Shawn Sidey is our master roaster of the Starbucks Reserve Roastery and Tasting Room. He was the person who I watched every day doing what he loves and talking about it, and seeing that made me say, hey I want to be like that. Being a Master Roaster to me is a symbol that you’re the best at what you do. Coffee did something for me I didn’t even know it would do. It made me fall in love and I want to give that to other people.
