Best Eats: Famena’s Famous Roti / Curry

Hi, I’m Mike with Peg City Grub. You
might not believe it but right now I am standing in perhaps the best smelling
place in Winnipeg. If you look there that vent is pumping out the unbelievable smell of of curries, roti, particularly some braised oxtail today from Famina’s Famous Roti. And what an amazing location. If you want to talk about a hole in the wall how about a little semicircle in between a parking garage. This place is amazing. We’re gonna go inside and meet the
owners. Let’s do it. Here comes the lamb roti. And there comes the oxtail. Enjoy. One of the first things that anyone knows
when they’re walking through this area is the smell. Yeah you could smell it from
Portage and Main. Customer come in, “I could smell it all the way from Portage and Main!” What did you guys think of the space when your first
thought because it’s for sure like the most unique space in Winnipeg. Actually I wasn’t looking for a space. I was building a restaurant on Notre Dame. The codes and everything, by the time you finish there, money was gone. So then, the last owner give up this spot. And I say, “You know what, we’re opening a restaurant tomorrow.” He said, “You’re not done over there yet.” I
said, “No we’re going downtown.” So we went and we get all the paperwork done
and we get our paperwork done on Friday. No advertisement, we open Monday morning. It’s not the best location Because sometimes it’s so small so if I do too
much advertising, I don’t have place to put people but customer understand. So when it’s packed as soon as they finish they leave. Right. On other days if it’s not packed, I don’t care how long you stay. But when we came here and we end up being
in the newspaper, so that’s how we get exposed, and customer is so loyal. I don’t know how we get on the internet but we’re on the internet. All over internet. So anywhere you go you just type in roti, you could type in hot spicy
foods, Caribbean, we come up. And in 2017, we were voted number one in Manitoba. The hot sauce. It’s hot. It’s hot. It’s hot. That is Scotch bonnet pepper and we have a hotter one And the bottle say
‘at your own risk’ It’s fire. When he tried his his colour’s gonna change like the red bottle. So you don’t need to go to the
gym or you don’t have to go tan Oh, ya, that’s pretty spicy, that’s spicy! Watch his colour! Watch his colour! He’s tanned. I know we are small, we are not like the high class. But, the food is high class. It doesn’t matter where you sit, you can buy a bite and go to the park. But it’s good food. Enjoy. And you heard about the hot sauce?
