Cooking Classes Cancelled at East

Cooking Classes Cancelled at East

Cooking classes at East Middle School
where one of the more popular electives for students, but this year they were not
offered as an elective choice. The classes were removed from the enrollment
form because we had some staffing changes and some teachers with skills
and abilities in new offerings that we wanted to bring to the table. Food
classes at East were among the most popular electives. Students that have come and
talked to me felt a real connection to Ms. Greenman and
also to the cooking class found a lot of enjoyment with some of the hands-on
activities and obviously the reward of eating the food afterwards.
Administration is proposing new ideas to replace the cooking classes. At this time
are moving in a more robotics direction and offering more robotics courses and
looking to really offer courses that offer great student interest but feed
into what the high schools offering and focusing on as well. They were very
popular and this year what we’re trying to do and as we plan for next year
we’re really trying to think about how to integrate cooking into say that
pottery class when you’re making bowls and/or some sort of container how could we celebrate that piece of art
with the use of food. This change of scheduling was a surprise to many
students. It’s really a shame because cooking is a
good skill in life that will benefit you not only if you wanted to go into the
cooking field but also at home if you need to cook one night for a family.
Cooking class was really fun last year and I learned a bunch of skills that I
still use till today but I guess it was kind of like expensive so it gives more
money to school now that’s gone. At this time administration has no plan to reinstate
cooking classes for next. Reporting for Trojan TV this has been Paxton and
Sterling.
