Here at Purple Moose Brewery, we make 5 core
beers all year round and then we have a number of special beers that we do each month throughout
the season. We began operations in 2005. Like a lot of people who get into micro-brewing,
it came from home-brew, which I did for some years. That’s what really got me thinking
in terms of setting up a commercial brewery one day, and here we are 10 years later!
There were very few micro-breweries across North Wales at the time, so I could see a
big gap in the market. Predominantly, our markets for cask beer are across North Wales.
We do use a number of wholesalers, so it does get far and wide through England now.
In the last year we have moved our retails outlet onto the high street in Porthmadog
and that’s proved phenomenally successful. (in Welsh) ‘Da ni’n dibynnu ar dwristiaid
yn dod i fyny i Ogledd Cymru yn enwedig yn ystod misoedd yr haf. ‘Da ni’n gwahodd
pobl mewn, da ni’n mynd a nhw ar daith o gwmpas y bragdy i ddangos y broses o cynhyrchu’r
cwrw. Ar ddiwedd y taith, mae pobl yn gallu samplo’ y cwrw ’da ni’n neud. Mae pobl
yn dod yma hefyd yn enwedig yn gwbod bod ni wedi ennill cymaint o wobrau – dros 80 mewn
10 mlynedd – rhai cenedlaethol a rhail lleol hefyd.
Purple Moose Brewery, in association with have for nearly 4 years now, been operating
a really successful pub in Conwy – The Albion Alehouse – and in the last year we’ve
been able to take on another pub in Conwy and one here in Porthmadog.
The Welsh Government were very supportive when we initially set up the brewery. We got
a grant towards the set-up costs back in 2004, which really helped. Since then we’ve had
funding towards training myself and other members of staff. They’ve been particularly
supportive in funding export trade missions. For Purple Moose Brewery, I’m looking to
find good export markets for our brand and our products. I’ve been to Chine, Sweden
and Finland recently as well. The Welsh Government are really helpful in that – really wanting
to see small Welsh producers get into export markets.
The company is continuing to grow year on year. It’s going to be only a matter of
time before we can no longer stay on this site – we’ll have to look for somewhere
bigger. We’re very proud of what we’ve achieved here. Ten years on, I could never
have imagined we could have got to this stage where we are today.
