Meet Flanders’ Brewers: Rosa Merckx

Flanders is above all a land of brewers and they love their craft. If I hadn’t enjoyed working here, I wouldn’t have made good beers. My name is Rosa Merckx and I’m the head brewer at Liefmans brewery Even after all these years, the brewery is still the most special place in my life. A long time ago, the owner of the brewery was looking for a secretary… …and I said, “Well, let’s try it for a month,”… …but 46 years later, I still enjoy coming to the brewery. He said, “Try this beer. What do you think of it?” I said, “Not good,” I found it sour. “You might be right,” he said, “We’re going to make it a bit softer.”… … And that was the beginning of Goudenband. As a brewer, you need to make sure that everything is in place before you start. To start with, the kind of hops you’re going to use, and the sort of malt. You need to have the best ingredients. Otherwise, you won’t get the right result. You can find mediocre beer anywhere. Brewers create something. Just like a painter creates a painting,…
…we make good beer. Beer is something that lives. Watching it live and develop; it’s beautiful. When I see that, it gives me joy. Beer became my life, and I’m glad it did. This industry is developing so rapidly; I think it’s great. It used to be that you would only brew beer for your region,… …but now it goes around the world – that’s something to be proud of. I hope this business can expand, but at the same time… …keep its heart and soul away from commercialisation – … …so we can craft beer, rather than manufacture it. If something is good, it lasts. And that’s good.
