The Kronenbourg Brewery in Obernai

For over 350 years, we have worked passionately to constantly perfect the art of brewing and nourish innovation in all its forms. 1 out of every 3 beers consumed in France is produced here, in Obernai, Alsace, in the largest brewery in France. Almost 800 employees who are passionate about brewing work here. This 70-hectare site, which was built in 1969, is home to the headquarters of Kronenbourg. Our beer contains natural ingredients with 90% water, hops and non GMO barley, 80% of which comes from the north-east of France. Around 600 tonnes of malt are delivered here every day and sent to one of the 3 rooms where the brewing tanks are located. It is inside these immense tanks that the water and malt are mixed to make around ten different beer recipes. In the control room, just 2 operators are in charge of the 3 brewing rooms. To guarantee consistency of the taste of our different beers, we check their quality at every stage of production. Kronenbourg was the first brewery in France to be awarded ISO 9002 certification for the quality of its production. When brewing is completed, yeast is added to the cooled mixture to activate its fermentation. The product then develops its full character with the conversion of the sugar into alcohol, carbon dioxides and flavours that give the beer its typical features. It then remains in the maturation tanks at minus 1 degree before being filtered. This is where the Carlsberg Group set up its Research and Development centre in 2014. Innovations in liquids and packaging, such as the Green Fiber Bottle, made from 100% recyclable wood fibre are developed for worldwide markets. 45 scientists specialising in the agro-food industry and biochemistry work on the creation of new beers in this 900m² laboratory. Their quality controls are performed on samples sent from all over the world. Experts from the centre meet here every day to conduct taste tests. In the same way, we have a consumer panel whose members are selected and trained in tasting that meets every week. The centre also houses a micro brewery that makes it possible to test small-scale production of new beers. A genuine small-scale production tool, it enables us to produce around ten new recipes every week for the whole world. We produce up to 700 million litres of beer per year on our production site. 250 employees work on packaging the beer in bottles, cans and kegs. The brewery has 11 packaging lines. A total of 120,000 litres of beer are packaged here every hour. We use 10 different types of bottles. In total we package more than 30 different liquids each day and up to 180,000 hectolitres of beer per week during peak periods. We offer our customers over 300 beer references. Their packaging is subject to strict control before being shrink-wrapped and then palletised. Initial and ongoing training are are key to our industrial performance. In 2014, the brewery was OHSAS 18001 certified. Awareness raising and training are the pillars of our ZERO accident culture. The beer is stored in this hall before being sent to the loading platforms. 80% of our products are sent by train from this site to our regional storage platforms. By opting for transport by rail, we are reducing our carbon footprint. We were one of the first manufacturers to manage waste water treatment by including a treatment station when the site was built. Before it is treated, this waste water is sent to the methanation units. When fermented, this waste generates BIOGAS, which is used as a fuel. Our brewery was the first one in the world to be awarded ISO 14001 certification, proof of its environmental performance. Our different brands are available at all points of sales, both in big cities and small villages in France. Lagers, speciality beers, flavoured beers, with or without alcohol… Kronenbourg Brewing for a better today and tomorrow
