This is Michigan | Brewery Vivant Serves Up a Healthier Planet

Sustainability is a big part of our
identity as a business, and we develop deeper relationships
in our community because of it. What we try to do is really show how
often there are ways to synthesize your business impact with the
environment and with society. In Environmental
Justice class, we saw a lot of polluting industries
with neighborhoods around them. As I got older, I started thinking about what being
a good member of society could look like, and what could a
business’s impact be. Also, after taking this
Environmental Justice class, I then taught it with
four other students. I really started understanding that
we can all create our own reality, and take what we know
and inspire others. We run this business with
a triple bottom line approach, putting equal emphasis on people
and planet — not just on profit. We are looking at how much water we’re
using to create beer, we compost as much as
we can from our restaurant, and then within the brewery, most of the
organic waste there is actually spent grain, which goes to a local farmer
who feeds it to his cattle. We also have
192 solar panels that give us about 12% of our
electricity throughout the year. We donate 1% of our sales
to local organizations, as well as volunteering 350 hours
each year within those organizations. And we are really wanting to keep our
spend within the state of Michigan. If you spend your
money locally, a lot more of that money actually
stays within your community. One of the things that I find so
inspiring about Brewery Vivant is what a model they are
for sustainable business. What makes me really proud is
I think we’re starting to help people have a better and a bigger expectation for what
a business can look like in their community.
