UA Alumni Stories: John Blystone

(rock music) – My name is John Blystone. I’m the electrical and
controls department manager here at Great Lakes Brewing
Company in Cleveland, Ohio. (rock music) Electrical engineers
are needed everywhere, including the brewing industry. We help optimize the automation systems, we maintain, design, and
implement systems and equipment that use electrical power, electronics, and electromagnetics to make
sure we are producing beer as quickly, efficiently, and
consistently as possible. Being an electrical engineer here at Great Lakes Brewing Company is definitely not a desk job. Here in our production brewery, I helped automate a
sequence in the brewhouse, eliminating 17 manual steps
that our brewers had to perform. On our bottling line, I help
with a project that allows us to recycle our rinse water
to cool a vacuum pump. All of this, towards
helping to make that perfect pint of beer. I received my Bachelors of
Science in electrical engineering from the University of
Akron, in Akron, OH. While in Akron, I co-opted Morton Salt, that allowed me to get
some hands-on experience applying the knowledge that I
had learned in the classroom. Never in a million years
did I think I’d be working here at Great Lakes. I’ve had an incredible career. I’ve traveled the world
solving all sorts of problems in the chemical and rubber industries, and now I work with some great teams here, solving problems at Great Lakes Brewing Company in Cleveland. (electric guitar riffs)
