Vocal Fry (Good or Bad?) – Q&A With John

Hello everyone! I’m John Tracy and
welcome to the voice guru! For the past few years, we’ve seen a lot of videos and tutorials about vocal fry. I just don’t understand this principle. Why is this a
thing, or more importantly, why is this still a thing. And even though it sounds
cool to many people, I personally believe that it could be harmful for the body. To me, vocal fry seems like speaking
with a closed throat and tensing the vocal cords in order to execute a sound. Even though it is believed that vocal
fry is not harmful for the voice, I truly believe that using this particular
technique can damage not necessarily the vocal chords but the technique. By going
through some research online, I’ve discovered that many believe that vocal
fry is not harmful for the voice. Using the voice in one specific way to speak
will immediately affect your singing voice. So I always say that the singing
voice should be inspired from the spoken voice and vice versa. Meaning you do not change not only who you are but also the way you use your body when you’re speaking or when you’re singing While many people worship this process I
truly believe that singers should not rely on this particular technique in
order to sing or develop the voice. Being a singer is being able to do everything
that is available to you in your throat in your vocal cords but also being a
singer is knowing how to balance things. A singer knows how to use his or her
voice in a free manner because I see it as a workout. You do not develop
your body’s strength and possibilities just by pushing and pulling. It’s all
about balance, and knowing how to balance things. If you’re looking to sing with a free sound, you need to keep the throat open without
creating any tension. So as a summary, vocal fry is the fact
of creating a sound effect with your voice. Is it good or is it bad? It’s good
because it means you know how to do many things with your voice but it’s bad if
you don’t know how to undo this procedure. Do not use vocal fry in everyday life, in everything that you’re doing. So
you’re not going to start speaking this way all the time and definitely not
singing this way. A good singer knows how to balance things and knows when to use
specific techniques. For more information on singing, check out the FREE LESSONS
playlist in my channel. You can also find me on Instagram and Facebook. I’m John
Tracy and thank you all for watching!
