Young M.A On Directing Porn, And Opening Her Dream Seafood Restaurant | What’s Ur Thing | Fuse

Yo! Welcome to
What’s Ur Thing? I’m Cipha Sounds. This is the show where I
talk to my friends, your favorite celebrities,
about their secret obsessions,
passions. What’s up, Keith? Yo, I hate that guy. Anyway, on today’s show,
we got Brooklyn MC, Young M.A Ooh! AUDIENCE: Ooh! What? It’s going down. Her thing is cooking and
we’re talking about that healthy style of cooking. Ok? Hey! Where’s that
salad I ordered? Yo, I don’t even
eat vegetables. Ladies and gentleman,
welcome to What’s Ur Thing? ♪ ♪ Ladies and gentlemen, can
we make some noise for Young M.A in the
building right now? [cheers and applause] I don’t know
what y’all doing. Young M.A, what’s up? What’s good? I’m saying it
correctly also, right? Absolutely. Do you hate when people
call you Young Mah? No, I don’t hate it. It’s just like,
don’t call me that. You correct them? Yeah. Has anyone ever
called you Yum-ah? No, I heard some crazy. I heard Young May. Young May, that’s like
one of the number ones. Sometimes people
call me Remy Mah. That’s like one
of those new ones. Yeah, it gets confusing. So you got some
music coming out. Yeah. A song called “Bleed”. Oh, yeah, that’s droppin’. That’s droppin’. What’s that about? It’s just one of
those joints, man. I feel like I ain’t gave
my day ones in a while that raw M.A. You know what I mean? That M.A that was, you
know, on the comeup, that was humble, that was
talking that ish, man, with no filter. You know, even though
I still got that same ability about me, but this
one is a little more raw. You know what I mean? Right. Just for them. The thorough M.A, yeah. Now I saw you’re on the
Forbes 30 under 30. How’s that feel? You’re in the
upper echelon now. Yeah, that’s different. That’s like, you
know what I mean? That’s boss moves
right there. That’s something I never
even dreamed about. Who’s on that, have you
met anybody else on the list? I can’t even remember
who’s on the list. Oh, you only looked
at your name. Wow, that’s selfish. That’s all I seen? No, I saw the names. Don’t say that. I saw the names. Let me ask you a
question, Young M.A. Something they
called “The Gifted”. That was an adult film
you wrote and direct? Oh, you heard about that? I did. I actually had to watch
it for research purposes. Eh, you know. How did that work out? It’s something I do
from time to time. You’ve done more than one? Nah, I’m playing. [laughter] Well you have one
released, but you also make some on your own. Independent films? No, no independent films. [laughter] Na na na strictly,
you know what I mean? Rock and shout out to them
or whatever the case. But no, that was
the only film. First time doing it. It was dope. It was cool. I had to watch it literally
for research purposes. And I was like, this
is a nicely made movie. The content
itself is amazing. We love that part. Then I was like looking
at some of the shots. I was like, oh, there’s
some real nice. Like the angels right? Crystal clear, right? You didn’t want to make an
appearance in the movie? No. You didn’t want to
be in it at all. Even like a pizza delivery
girl or something? [laughter] No, you didn’t see me? I walked past real quick. Did you? I probably didn’t pay
attention to that part. Got to watch it all
the way to the end. After the credits. Uh, I’m going to put your
porn knowledge to the test. I’m going to read
some titles to you. You tell me if these are
real adult films or fake? Lordy, I might lose this. What do you mean? You’ll know by the titles. For example, “Intercourse
with a Vampire”. Real or fake? No, but sometimes they be
having the weirdest stuff. And there be names,
I don’t know. “Intercourse
with a Vampire”. Real or fake? I would say real. It is real. It is real. See? You’re in the game now! You be in the valley. Uh, “Whose Blood is That?” Yo, son. That one sounds real,
but I’m going to say no. That’s fake. Yeah. Yo, your porn-dar
is great for. “No Boys Allowed”
Five and Six. [laughter] That’s probably true. No, that one’s fake. [buzzer] That’s fake? Come on. They probably really
got one like that. “No Boys Allowed”
Volume 2. Oh yeah, I’m sure. Well we looked it up. Thoroughly. Thorough research. “Wet Dream on Elm Street”. [laughter] That might be true. “Wet Dream on Elm
Street” is real. You’re good at this game. “Fake News, Real Boobs”. It’s for the current
political climate we’re in. Fake? Fake. Whooo! “One Night in
Paris” is real. “One Night in Cincinnati”? [laughter] Fake. That is fake. Oh, this is a good one. This one is for, oh,
because you love cooking. “Someone Sat on
the Potato Salad”. That might be real. It’s fake, but it
should be real. I was about to say. Young MA, ladies
and gentlemen! [cheers and applause] Now I want to get
into What’s Ur Thing? So from what I heard,
your thing is cooking. Yeah. Break that down for me. Have you always
been into it? No. That’s the crazy thing. It’s new. It’s new. This probably happened
like a year and a half ago. Oh, it’s real new. Yeah, it’s real new. I just had the knowledge
from, you know, from seeing my moms and them,
you know, season certain things certain ways
and how it tasting. So I did a lot of that and
I think the first meal I ever took serious or real
meal that I took serious was baked chicken. I think it was baked
chicken, corn, and rice. Why did you decide
to make that meal? Because I had a taste
for it and I see my moms making it plenty of times. So, the sides are a
little bit easier. Once I read the
instructions I was good. It’s just, to me honestly,
it’s the seasoning that matters. You know what I mean? How you season it. And I like spicy food. Like, I’m a real
cayenne pepper. Were you making
it for anybody. Did anyone else eat it? At the time, yeah, yeah. My significant
other at the time. I made it, and she
thought it was good too! Like, she thought
it was good. She was like, for your first
try you actually did good. Yeah. So you never
cooked before that? No. Like just simple stuff? Simple stuff! Like you might’ve
made eggs. Frozen food. You know what I mean? Oh that Stouffer’s
French Bread Pizza? Yeah, you know
what I mean? Yeah, DiGiorno. You know? Oh breakfast,
breakfast, breakfast. I’m bugging, I’m bugging. Breakfast is my specialty. It’s almost impossible
to mess up breakfast. I was about to say, yeah, that’s
probably the most I ever did. But like dinner,
nah never. Okay. This is your first
time cooking chicken. You wasn’t worried about
under cooking and maybe getting salmonella
poisoning. Absolutely, I was
worried about that. That’s why I made sure it
was in there for a long amount of time. Even if it was overcooked. I didn’t care. I’d rather that. Over is way better. Way better than
under cooked. I always check that. You know, you gotta
slice and make sure. Oh, I worked at Chicken
Choice in high school. I know how to
cook some chicken. Okay. I checked the [whistles] Yeah, you got
to make sure. As long as it ain’t
bleeding, I’m good. So the first meal you
do comes out good. Then what, you
wanted to do more? I wanted to do more. It became, it started to
become like a therapy thing for me. That’s what I was
gonna ask you. Is it therapeutic? Yeah, it’s very
therapeutic. A lot of people that
cook tell me that. What makes it therapeutic? The focus of
it, the process? I think so. I think it’s the focus,
definitely the process, and then the
eager to know, like, you want the food to taste
good, and you know you feeding others, so
you want to please. You want to please
others with your food. You know what I mean? So, and it’s like, it’s
something different to me. Like me, I don’t like to be on
the same routine all the time. Like I like to do
different things. I like to try
different things. I feel like when you do the same
thing it becomes boring, you know
what I mean? So cooking to me became
something new in my life. Right. You know what I mean? At such a later age. That’s why I feel like
it’s therapeutic because it’s something new. That feeding someone
is like family vibes. And maybe you should change
your name to Young Mom. [laughter] Young Mom? And he was dead
serious too just now. [laughter] Like, you know. I don’t think I’ve ever
been dead serious. What are some of your
favorite things to cook now that you’re
this super chef. So I got this dish I make. It’s like my
favorite dish. I had randomly
made it one day. I don’t know what
made me make it. I didn’t never see
nobody make it. It was just I had these
items in my house and it was something
I wanted to do. I had shrimp, I had white
rice, I had string beans, and red beans. So I make all of those. And I’ll be having
the red peppers, green peppers, and
the yellow pepper. Sometimes the
orange peppers too. And uh, I cook
those in the pot. I like them crispy. I don’t like my
peppers still soft. Like, I like it
damn near burnt. To me, for
some reason– I’m a charred guy. Yeah, that’s me. I love toast. Everything toast,
everything crunchy. I loved that. And spicy as well. It got to be
seasoned well. It got to be spicy. And it got to be cooked. What if somebody calls you
while you’re prepping shrimp? You don’t answer? No, I answer. But I’m so nice with it. I can talk to
them on the phone. “What’s up,
what happened?” You know what I mean? And I’m rocking. It’s good. My shrimp always good. Is it like a health reason,
also, for this cooking? Did you like lose
a lot of weight? Oh yeah, at
that time, yeah. That was kind of part
of the reason too. When I started to get more
involved with it because I had cut out meat or
whatever the case. And I was more on a
pescatarian diet. So it wasn’t eating no eggs,
no milk, no stuff like that. So, you know, that
started off like that. That was mainly, that
was one of the reasons. Not fully the reason. I’m joking around a lot
with you, but on a serious side of things. Where we come from, eating
healthy is not even taught to us. You know, what I’m saying? We’ve been fed this nasty
food almost for generations. And, some of it is like,
some delicacies are like slave food. You know what I’m saying? In order to find ways to
get out of that is very. Very important. It’s impressive that
you even found it. When you get into cooking,
like there’s so much. Do you start watching like
food shows and stuff? I used to, you
know what’s crazy. I think that’s what made me
get into it as I got older. Because when I was a kid
I used to watch the most boring cooking shows. Before it was like
how they is now. Now it’s all exciting
battles and all that. Like they didn’t have non
of that when I was a kid. An old lady cooking. A regular old lady. No audience. It was just quiet. And it was just strictly
about her and the food. And I was into it. To me it was
entertainment. I don’t know, it was
something about the water boiling and she putting
the food in, and then seeing the meal
at the end. I was into that as a kid. If you wanted to get more
into it, would you ever think about
taking a class? I would love to see
you in a cooking class. No, I don’t got
patience for classes. I’d rather mess up
and learn that way. Right, hands on. Do you mix your
love life with food? Oh yeah, now that I
learned how to cook. Yeah, I be trying
to show off. I cook better than a lot
of women I’ve been around. Oh, what about you ever
run into any other like rappers that you talk
to about cooking? No. It’s crazy because I just,
I was just on my Instagram and I seen Desiigner had
posted something about him making some, I think
some steak or something. Then some cornbread
or something. I seen it. And I was saying to myself,
he ain’t rocking with it. He ain’t fucking
with me, man. We should create a
rap food battle show. I think we should do that. Know what I’m saying? We gotta we gotta
start it off. Like we have to limit the
amount of goons you can bring. Because I see some
of your video shoots. I come light. It’s still early,
that’s why. [laughter] Since you started this
process, has your food or your love of cooking
affected you making music in any way? Has it changed it? From cooking? Nah. Totally two different. I bet you it’s connected
and you don’t realize it. I ain’t gonna lie, it made
me feel more adultish knowing how to cook now. And actually watching
myself sit here and cook a whole meal. Yeah, it make me feel
like I’m getting older. Look at you. All grown up! Maturing, man. Young Grandmom. [laughter] Do the Damn Thing. Since you have a love for
cooking, Young M.A, I think the next natural step
would be to start a restaurant. Okay? Now, since you are from
Brooklyn, the most thoroughest borough-est, I
have all Brooklyn rappers here. We’ve got Desiigner,
Fabolous, Biggie, Jay Z, Lil Kim, and of
course, Young M.A. In this restaurant, we
have five positions that we need to fill. Okay, restaurant. What kind of restaurant
would you want to have? Uh, mostly seafood.-
Seafood restaurant? – Yeah. Like one of them
City Island joints? Yeah, City Island. Okay. Name of your restaurant. Let’s think of
a name for it. My Seafood. My Seafood? MA Seafood! Ma! Okay. Welcome to My Seafood. [laughter] It works! MA Seafood. What are you feeling? Who should go in different
spots just from what you see so far? Think about it. Desiigner. He used to work at Panda
Panda Panda Express. [laughter] You just thought of that? That was a good
one right there. Aight, so for the maître d’,
of course we have the lovely Lil Kim. You know, she’s so
small and petite. You can’t– you know,
you can’t deny her. Right. So she’s the first–
she’s the face. She’s the little
cutie in the front. Okay, I like what
you thinking so far. So boom. We got Lil Kim
at maître d’. Busboy…busboy. Oh, that’s a tough one. Cleaning the
dishes and stuff. Yeah, cleaning tables. Oh, Desiigner. Desiigner got so
much energy, man. Okay. Okay. You know what I mean? He got so much energy. He always [grunts] Right. So he could just
wash the dishes. So you’re saying he
got a lot of energy. Yeah, he got a lot of
energy, so he can bus them suds real quick. You know what I mean? This has nothing to do
with you saying you saw his Instagram of his steak
dinner and how it was horrible looking? No, it absolutely has
nothing to do with that. Okay. Okay. I get it. [wink chime] [laughter] Ok, we got Young M.A,
Fab, Biggie, and Jay. You know Biggie, right? You’re a little young. That’s my father
right there. Just making sure. Just making sure. So biggie. [sighs] I know it’s rough. I would have,
Fab seem like a. He’s got his glasses on. He seem like a
wine-ish type dude. Right. Yes. I don’t know. We have Jay-Z. And we haven’t even
filled your position. Where are you at? So for Biggie, I
had Biggie be the. Sous chef. Yeah, Biggie look like he
look like he just would. Likes to eat? Is that what you’re
trying to say? Of course! That he likes to eat. He look like he
could cook too. Right. Now you know what I
would do with Jay-Z? Okay. We gonna keep
him out here. We still need head chef. Oh, that’s me! Oh, we should’ve
known that. Yeah, that should have
been the first one. I’m head chef. I’m calling all the shots. Okay, that’s head chef. And you just leave
Jay-Z out in the cold. Jay-Z not just out. Jay-Z is damn near
a billionaire. You know what he do? He invest. He’s the investor. Silent investor. That’s right. I see what you’re saying. I see what you’re saying. So that’s what
we doing, man. So silent investor, Jay-Z. He don’t gotta
announce it. Shh! Keep it down. This would be perfect. You know he’s dead. So he’s not even going
to be a good sous chef. His spirit, it’s all
about the spirit. You put your spirit
in the cooking, man. Ladies and gentlemen,
welcome to MA Seafood. Young M.A. [applause] Is the hottest
restaurant in the game! Do The Damn Thing! Yo, thank you so much for
joining us on What’s Ur Thing? A big shout out to the
Young M.A for coming through and cooking up
such a marvelous episode. I hope she actually opens
up that restaurant in Brooklyn. Because you call
her Stephanie. I call her head chef-anie. Oh, that’s pretty good. I’m gonna go tell
her that right now. I’ll see you later. Yo, M.A! Mama!

  16. The best meals come from having little food in the home at the time and creating something from nothing. I remember when I first started cooking I used fish fry for pork chops. You live and you learn. Now I can make a lot of good food and of course still learning new things. Say this because kids now a days and adults say I can't too much. It's alot we can't do until we learn and practice.
